Having made a vow to come to the assistance of all sentient beings, Guanyin (Avalokiteśvara) is a bodhisattva who tirelessly relieves all manner of suffering and tribulation. Over the course of 2,000 years faith in Guanyin has spread throughout most of Asia, and to the present day this Buddhist embodiment of compassion continues to inspire profound veneration.

Depicted throughout the centuries in a wide variety of forms, Guanyin constantly observes all beings with eyes of compassion and offers protection. This exhibition explores the significance of Guanyin images and the related doctrinal developments which have taken place in Chinese Buddhism, beginning with the various names Guanyin is known by, and ending with a detailed presentation of the forms Guanyin has taken in the daily life of Taiwanese Buddhists. It is hoped that visitors will gain a deeper understanding of the cult of Guanyin, and will be spiritually inspired by the sacredness and beauty of these exquisite images of the Chinese bodhisattva of mercy.
