Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji headed to India...

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji headed to India on Jan 13 for a 5- day visit in the hope that India and Pakistan will open the door to dialogue and resolve the current deadlock. But Indian foreign minister Jaswant Singh said Zhu's visit was not aimed at easing Indo-Pakistani tensions, and that China is not willing to act as a mediator between India and Pakistan.

Singh stressed that India intends to mend fences with China, and that Sino-Indian relations are improving. The talks between Zhu and Indian prime minister Vajpayi will focus on economic cooperation. They will not discuss disputed issues such as Tibet.

The Tibetan government in exile in India also staged protests during Zhu's visit. Around 500 Tibetan exiles gathered in New Delhi to protest communist China's oppression in Tibet. "Tibet belongs to Tibetans," the protesters demanded.
