Mr Srimuang served two terms as mayor of Bangkok before becoming deputy prime minister. A long-time vegetarian and holder of the Eight Precepts, Mr Srimuang is also known for donating his full monthly salaries, and for his clean public image. One of the most respected politicians in Thailand, Mr Srimuang earned him the nickname Mr Clean with valiant crackdowns on corruption and crime. He is a politician practicing politics according to Buddhist principles.
