The Dazu Rock Carvings situated in the Dazu district of Chongqing municipality is a general term for religious grotto art since the Tang and Sung Dynasties, one of China’s three most famous grotto groups- Yungang. Longmen and Dazu. The steep hillsides of the Dazu area contain an exceptional series of rock carvings dating from the 9th to the 13th century. The Dazu Rock Carvings are remarkable for their aesthetic quality, their rich diversity of subject matter, both secular and religious, and the light that they shed on everyday life in China during this period. They also provide evidence of the harmonious coexistence of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism, and have marked one of the most magnificent chapters of the world grotto art. In October of 1999, The Dazu Rock Carvings were listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

As the last monumental work of Chinese grotto art history, the Dazu Rock Carvings built upon the legacy of grotto art in India, China and Sichuan to create their unique artistic style. The exhibition is structured around two themes:

  1. The Beauty of Art: Through the five main clusters of the Dazu Rock Carvings and exhibit items, the exhibition presents the aspects of Dazu Rock Carvings such as their grand scale, high aesthetic quality, diversity of subject matter and religious synthesis to highlight the aesthetic paradigm created in the process of sinification of Buddhist art.
  2. Conservation of Cultural Heritage: The exhibition features the Project of National Protection of the Stone Cultural Heritage- Dazu Baodingshan’s Thousand-hand Bodhisattva Statue Restoration Works to show the latest progress and outstanding achievement in the conservation of Dazu cultural heritage.
