The Qur’an is the fundamental scripture of Islam. Learning the Qur’an by-heart or making copies of it are benevolent acts by which Muslims display reverence for the scripture. Although hand-copied editions exist in many languages, most use the Arabic language in which the word of Allah was announced, and which later developed distinctive calligraphic arts. This page comes from the so-called Blue Qur’an, a rare Kufic manuscript of the 9th or 10th century, written in gold ink on blue-dyed parchment. It covers verses 187-194 of the 3rd Sura. The relatively few words of elongated script with resplendent decoration, and the uniformity of fifteen lines to a page show that execution of the whole text followed meticulous rules. This luxurious Qur’an displays veneration for the scripture and suggests its patron was a wealthy and powerful aristocrat.
