Also known as “Korai” (Korean) Lion-Dogs, the lion with its mouth open and haku (lion-dog) with mouth closed, form a pair in front of the main temple of the shrine. Defending the shrine by preventing danger or evil spirits from entering, they are indispensable architectural feature of Shinto temples. Most are made from stone; others of wood, iron, bronze, or ceramic.
